Farsons brewery which was originally set up with Bavarian expertise had been acquired by the Marquis John Scicluna, one of Malta’s foremost bankers of the period. A pioneering banker, it was the Marquis Scicluna who introduced the use of ‘cheques’ in Malta and from which the name ‘Cisk’ would emerge. While competition between the two breweries was to remain intense over the next 20 years, a successful alliance was formed in 1948, whereupon Simonds Farsons Cisk Ltd, was born. Coinciding with the formation of the new company, construction of a new brewery in Mriehel was also underway. Designed by Lewis V Farrugia and inaugurated in 1950, the iconic new brewery is today considered to be on of Malta’s finest examples of Art Deco architecture. Built at a time when there was little industry in Malta, the opening of the Farsons Brewery was a grand event and marked an important point in the industrialisation of post-war Malta. Then as now, the Farsons Brewery remains at the forefront of Malta’s business landscape through an incessant programme of investment in its people, brands and operation. By continuously looking ahead and taking the long term view, the brewery remains driven by the future while never losing sight of its past and the entrepreneurial spirit that has guided its growth and development for almost a century.
