The history of Barton & Guestier dates back to the early 18th century when Thomas Barton, an adventurous Irishman, left his homeland and settled in Bordeaux at the age of 30. In 1725, he founded his wine-shipping company, which quickly flourished, earning him the nickname “French Tom” among his loyal clients. By 1747, he had become Bordeaux’s leading shipper and was the first to own his own wine estates. In 1802, his grandson Hugh Barton partnered with French trader Daniel Guestier to establish Barton & Guestier, now recognized as the oldest wine merchant in Bordeaux.
